An online three-hour long webinar with Khabhar Now – Understanding Gender and Patriarchy was organised to acquaint journalists from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on nuances of gender, patriarchy as well as the internalised biases. It was held online on Wednesday, 22nd December 2021, from 10 A.M.- 1P.M. The aimed attendance was 30.
Three sessions, Introduction to Gender and Patriarchy, Identifying Our Own Internalised Biases, and How To Create Gender Sensitive Content/ Reportage were taken. The three faculty were:
• Sharat Pradhan, Founder, Khabar Now and TheFreePress
• Sayed Raza Hussain Zaidi - A gender trainer, queer feminist, co-founder of Aazaadi International.
• Shubhangi Singh- A dynamic human rights activist with over 10 years of experience. She is currently on the board of Aazaadi Foundation International (AFI)
A total of 26 attendees from remote areas of Uttar Pradesh as well as Ranchi were in attendance. The webinar was live streamed on the facebook page of Khabar Now and had garnered 65 views.
Dr. A.L. Sharada in her formal welcome note underlined the importance of a more gender nuanced reporting as well as how patriarchal mindsets insidiously hindered a broader outlook. She also emphasised the importance of being vigilant as in numerous cases people may not be aware of their existence. She noted that the role of such workshops was to take a dispassionate view of our own internalised biases, which may lie beneath the surface and impact the thought process.
Sayed Raza the faculty for Introduction to Gender and Patriarchy took the participants through various nuances of gender, patriarchy and the intersectionality of the two were at play in the society.
Shubhangi Singh, helped the participants explore their internal biases. She also shared examples of biases as well as stereotypical pictorial depictions in media reportage.
Sharat Pradhan urged the media to be mindful of stereotypical writings and illustrations. He noted the dilemma faced by the journalists and the editors and acknowledged that they had to use what is considered the best representation of the group. He however cautioned the attendees against succumbing to these constraints.
