Population First and Whistling Woods International (WWI) organised an online webinar on ‘Gender sensitivity in communication curriculum’ to mark the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence on 4th December, 2020. The participants joined on zoom and the webinar was streamed live on the Facebook pages of Population First, UNFPA India, and WWI.
The speakers were: Dr. Anita Patankar, Director, Symbiosis School of Liberal Arts; Ms Suchitra Sathe, faculty, FTII; Ms Preeti Shroff, Dean, MICA; Ms Arvina
Purkayastha, Founder and CEO, Broadcast1; and Mr Rahul Puri, Head of academics, WWI. The session was moderated by Anjum Rajabali, HoD Screenwriting, WWI School of Filmmaking.
Dr Sharada, Director, Population First welcomed the participants and spoke about the theme of the webinar. Shobhana Boyle of UNFPA said that the theme was important and UNFPA and Population First had been working on it for many years. The panelists associated with educational institutions observed that
they were trying to create a safe space for students of all genders, the communication channels were open; however, the reality hit the students when they joined the industry.
Some of the observations from the webinar were:
The whole education system needed an overhaul from a gender perspective
Students have to be prepared to face the reality, which most often is different from the closed protected environment of their educational institutions
The persons teaching gender related issues also can be ignorant about their own prejudices
Girls may be getting 13 encouragement at home to excel in studies/careers, yet there is a glass ceiling to be broken everywhere
Invitations to watch the event were shared with the past winners, past and present jury members associated with the Laadli Media Awards, media contacts, media schools and media students etc. via whatsapp and email. The invites were shared on Facebook and Twitter.
The event has been watched by 1,200 people so far.
